# Embedded Editor Launch Modes

The launch mode decides what the Templated embedded editor shows when it opens **without a template ID in the URL**, for example:

```
https://app.templated.io/editor?embed=EMBED_ID
```

If the URL contains a template ID (`/editor/TEMPLATE_ID?embed=...`), `clone=true` or `render=RENDER_ID`, the editor opens that template or render directly and the launch mode is not used.

## Where to set it

1. Go to the Embedded Editor page: https://app.templated.io/embed
2. Open the **Launch Mode** section.
3. Pick one option and save.

## The launch modes

### Account Templates

Users pick one of your account templates in a searchable template selection window. Then you choose what happens when a template is selected:

- **Create Copy** (default): creates a new template from the one selected. The copy is saved in your account and appears in your dashboard. It counts toward your template limit.
- **Create Clone**: creates a clone. Clones do not appear in your dashboard and do not count toward your template limit. You find them with the API (`GET /v1/templates/clones`).
- **Edit Original**: the user edits your template directly. Saving changes your original template.

Show only one folder: add `&folder=FOLDER_ID`.

Show only the templates of one user: add `&external-id=USER_ID`. To show the user's templates and your account templates together, also add `&include-account-templates=true`.

### Template Gallery

Users browse Templated's public template gallery and pick a design. A new template is created from it in your account.

### Blank Template

The editor opens an empty canvas. You can set the size with `&w=1080&h=1080`, or start from an image with `&image-url=https://...` (the canvas takes the image size).

### User Renders (URL only)

Shows the user's previous renders so they can open one and edit it. Use it with `external-id` so each user sees only their own renders. This mode is set with the URL parameter `launch-mode=user-renders`.

## Override the launch mode in the URL

Use the `launch-mode` parameter to use a different mode for one embed:

| Value | Mode |
|---|---|
| `user-templates` | Account Templates |
| `template-gallery` | Template Gallery |
| `user-renders` | User Renders |
| `blank` | Blank Template |

Example:

```
https://app.templated.io/editor?embed=EMBED_ID&launch-mode=user-templates&folder=FOLDER_ID
```

The Create Copy / Create Clone / Edit Original choice is taken from your embed configuration.

## Other ways to open the editor

- Open one template: `https://app.templated.io/editor/TEMPLATE_ID?embed=EMBED_ID`
- Clone one template: `https://app.templated.io/editor/TEMPLATE_ID?embed=EMBED_ID&clone=true`
- Edit a render: `https://app.templated.io/editor?embed=EMBED_ID&render=RENDER_ID`
- Let users switch templates while editing: add `&allow-template-selection=true`

## FAQ

Q: How do I show a list of my templates for users to choose from?
A: Use the Account Templates launch mode and open the editor without a template ID: `https://app.templated.io/editor?embed=EMBED_ID`.

Q: How do I make sure users never change my templates?
A: Choose Account Templates with Create Clone or Create Copy, or open a specific template with `&clone=true`.

Q: Can I always clone the template the user picks?
A: Yes. Set Account Templates to Create Clone.

Q: Can I show only some templates?
A: Yes. Put them in a folder and add `&folder=FOLDER_ID` to the URL.

Q: The editor opens my template directly instead of the template list. Why?
A: Your URL contains a template ID (`/editor/TEMPLATE_ID`). Remove it to show the list.

Q: What values does launch-mode accept?
A: `user-templates`, `template-gallery`, `user-renders` and `blank`.
