Embedded Editor Permissions
You control what your users can do in the Templated embedded editor in two places:
- The Embedded Editor page of the dashboard (https://app.templated.io/embed): permissions for the whole embed configuration.
- URL parameters in the embed URL: options you can change per page or per user.
Some options exist only in one of the two places. This article lists both.
Permissions set in the dashboard
Open https://app.templated.io/embed, expand the permissions section, change the switches and save.
Setting | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
Allow Rename | Users can change the template name | On |
Allow Save | Users can save changes to templates | On |
Allow Resize | Users can change the canvas size | Off |
Allow Multi-Page | Users can add pages to templates | On |
Allow Download | Shows the Download button so users can render and download | On |
Allowed download formats | Which formats users can download: JPG, PNG, PDF |
Important: these settings are controlled in the dashboard. Adding allow-download=false, allow-save=false, allow-rename=false or allow-resize=false to the URL does not turn them off. To hide the Download button or block saving, change the setting in the dashboard.
Tip: to remove the Save button but still save from your own button, keep Allow Save on and add &hide-save-button=true to the URL. Then save with the SAVE message (see "Embedded Editor Events") or Ctrl/Cmd + S.
Permissions set in the URL
Add these to the embed URL, for example https://app.templated.io/editor/TEMPLATE_ID?embed=EMBED_ID&allow-edit-text-only=true.
Parameter | What it does |
|---|---|
| Only text layers can be selected, moved, resized and edited. Images, shapes and videos are locked. |
| Users cannot create new templates from the editor. |
| Adds a Templates tab so users can switch to another template. |
| Shows the video timeline, play and pause, and video settings. |
| Users cannot unlock layers you locked in the template. |
| Users cannot rename layers. |
| Users edit a clone, so your original template never changes. |
Lock parts of the design
The simplest way to keep parts of a design fixed is to lock those layers in the Templated editor before embedding (lock icon in the layers panel). Locked layers cannot be moved or edited by your users. Add &allow-layer-unlock=false so they cannot unlock them.
Hide parts of the interface (URL)
Parameter | What it hides |

| Only some sidebar tabs. Names: text, images, videos, shapes, vectors, uploads, qr-code, barcode, rating |
| The top header bar |
| The layers panel |

Preview Mode and Form Mode permissions
In Preview Mode (/editor/preview/TEMPLATE_ID?embed=EMBED_ID), only the canvas is shown and nothing can be changed unless you allow it. Use these URL parameters:
Parameter | What it allows |
|---|---|
| Selecting layers |
| Moving layers |
| Resizing layers |
| Double-click to edit text |
You can also change them after loading with messages like SET_ALLOW_LAYER_MOVE. These four parameters are meant for Preview Mode. In the normal embedded editor, users can already select, move and resize unlocked layers.
In Form Mode (/editor/form/TEMPLATE_ID?embed=EMBED_ID), unlocked layers appear as form fields and locked layers are hidden from the form.

Examples
Users can only change texts, on a copy of your template, without creating new templates:
