# External ID Sessions (Embedded Editor)

The `external-id` URL parameter links everything a user creates in the Templated embedded editor to an ID from your system (for example your user ID, client ID or project ID). When the same ID is used again, the user finds their previous uploads, fonts and templates.

## How to use it

Add `external-id` to the embed URL:

```
https://app.templated.io/editor/TEMPLATE_ID?embed=EMBED_ID&external-id=user-123
```

Use the same value every time the same user opens the editor.

## What gets tagged

| Content | Tagged with the external ID |
|---|---|
| Templates created or saved in the session (copies and clones) | Yes |
| Renders created in the session | Yes |
| Images and videos the user uploads | Yes |
| Fonts the user uploads | Yes |

## What the user sees

- **Uploads panel**: only the uploads tagged with their external ID. Your account uploads and other users' uploads are not shown.
- **Fonts**: fonts they uploaded in earlier sessions are available again.
- **Template picker** (Account Templates launch mode, no template in the URL): only templates tagged with their external ID. To also show your account templates (templates without an external ID), add `&include-account-templates=true`.
- **User Renders launch mode** (`&launch-mode=user-renders`): only their own renders.

Without `external-id`, the Uploads panel in the embedded editor is empty unless you add `&load-uploads=true` (which shows your account uploads).

## Find a user's content with the API

Use the `externalId` query parameter:

```
GET https://api.templated.io/v1/templates?externalId=user-123
GET https://api.templated.io/v1/templates/clones?externalId=user-123
GET https://api.templated.io/v1/renders?externalId=user-123
```

All requests need your API key in the `Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY` header. Docs: https://templated.io/docs/templates/list/ and https://templated.io/docs/templates/clones/

## Naming tips

- Use a stable, unique ID per user, client or project: `user-482`, `client-acme`, `project-summer-2026`.
- Use letters, numbers and hyphens. Avoid spaces and special characters.
- Do not put personal data like email addresses in the external ID.

## Examples

Each user edits their own clone and keeps their own uploads:

```
https://app.templated.io/editor/TEMPLATE_ID?embed=EMBED_ID&clone=true&external-id=user-123
```

Template picker with the user's templates plus your shared templates:

```
https://app.templated.io/editor?embed=EMBED_ID&external-id=user-123&include-account-templates=true
```

Questions about how external IDs are secured or validated are handled case by case by our team. Ask in the chat and a team member will help you.

## FAQ

Q: How do I keep each user's uploads separate?
A: Add `&external-id=USER_ID` to the embed URL, with a different ID for each user.

Q: My user's uploads disappeared. Why?
A: The editor was opened with a different `external-id` value, or without it. Use exactly the same value every time.

Q: How do I list the templates or clones of one user?
A: Call the API with `?externalId=USER_ID`, for example `GET /v1/templates/clones?externalId=user-123`.

Q: Can a user see my account templates and their own templates together?
A: Yes. Add `&include-account-templates=true` together with `external-id`.

Q: Is external-id required?
A: No. It is optional, but recommended when many different users use your embedded editor.
