# Import from Photoshop (PSD), PDF, Illustrator and PowerPoint

You can create a Templated template from an existing design file. Templated reads the file and converts it into a template with editable layers (text, images and shapes). You can then edit it in the editor and generate images with the API.

## Available importers

All importers are in the dashboard under **Create Template**:

| Tab | What you can import |
|-----|---------------------|
| **Canva** | A Canva design, using its Public view link (see "Import from Canva") |
| **Create with AI** | A new template generated from a text description |
| **Import File** | PDF (`.pdf`), Photoshop (`.psd`), Illustrator (`.ai`) and PowerPoint (`.pptx`, `.ppt`) files |
| **More > Polotno** | A Polotno design file |
| **More > Bannerbear** | A Bannerbear template |
| **More > HTML** | Your own HTML code |

There is **no Figma importer**. To bring a Figma design, export it as PDF or as images, or rebuild it in the Templated editor. Figma auto-layout is not supported.

## How to import a file

1. In the dashboard, click **Create Template** (left sidebar).
2. Open the **Import File** tab.
3. Drag and drop your file, or click to select it (PDF, PSD, AI or PPTX).
4. Click **Import**.
5. When the import finishes, the new template opens in the editor.

You can run one import of each file type at a time.

## Importing Photoshop (PSD) files

- **Upload your custom fonts first.** Before importing, upload the fonts used in the PSD to your account (select a text layer in any template, click the font name in the toolbar, then **Upload a font**). The importer matches PSD text to your uploaded fonts by font family name and by PostScript name (for example `BrandSans-Bold`). Fonts that are not found are replaced by a similar available font.
- **Layer names are kept.** Your PSD layer names become the Templated layer names. Name your text and image layers clearly in Photoshop (for example `title`, `photo`) so they are ready to use with the API.
- **Simple files import best.** Large agency PSDs with many groups, smart objects, masks, adjustment layers and effects may fail or import with differences. Simplify the file (merge decorative layers, remove hidden layers you do not need) and try again.
- **It is a one-time conversion.** Templated does not automate PSD files directly. The PSD is converted into a Templated template, and you edit and render that template.

## Importing PDF, Illustrator and PowerPoint files

- Each page or slide becomes a page in the template.
- Text, images and shapes are extracted where possible.
- Import works best with simple, clean layouts. Complex designs with many overlapping elements may not convert perfectly, but they give you a good starting point.

## Credits and template limit

- Imported templates count toward your plan's **template limit**. If you are at the limit, the import shows "You have reached the maximum number of templates". Delete a template or [upgrade your plan](https://app.templated.io/upgrade).
- Maximum upload size is 100 MB per file.

## After the import

1. Compare the template with the original file and fix any differences.
2. Rename layers to clear names if needed. The API uses these exact names.
3. Save the template.
4. Test with the Playground or a render.

Tip: to combine several imported templates into one multi-page template, go to My Templates, select them with the checkbox and click **Merge**. The first template defines the page size.

## Common errors

- **"Unsupported file type. Use PDF, PSD, AI, or PPTX."** The file extension is not supported. Export your file to one of these formats.
- **"Invalid file type. Only .psd files are accepted."** The file does not end in `.psd`.
- **"You already have a PSD import in progress"** (or PDF, Illustrator, PowerPoint). Wait for the current import to finish.
- **"Import failed. Please try again."** Try again. If it keeps failing, simplify the file or send it to us in the chat with your account email.

## FAQ

A: Yes. `.ai`, `.pptx` and `.ppt` files are supported in the Import File tab.

Q: My PSD imported with the wrong fonts. What do I do?
A: Upload the missing fonts to your account and import the PSD again, or select the text layers and change the font in the editor.

Q: Can Templated render my PSD file directly via API?
A: No. The PSD is converted into a Templated template once. You then render that template with the API.
