# Troubleshooting Canva Imports

This article lists the messages you may see when importing a Canva design (Create Template > Canva tab) and what to do for each one. For the basic steps, see "Import from Canva".

## Error messages and fixes

### "Invalid Link. Make sure you're using the 'Public View Link' from Canva's share menu."
The link you pasted is not a Canva design link in the expected format.
- In Canva, click **Share** > **Public view link**, copy it and paste it again.
- Make sure you copied the full link, with nothing added before or after it.
- Video design links (for example links with `/watch`) are not supported. Only static image designs can be imported.

### "URL must start with https://canva.link/ or https://canva.com/design/"
The link is not from Canva. Paste a link that starts with `https://www.canva.com/design/`, `https://www.canva.cn/design/` or `https://canva.link/`.

### "Heads up: this is an editor link, not a Public view link..."
You pasted the address bar link (ending in `/edit`). This is a warning, not an error. The import only works if link sharing is turned on for the design. If it fails, use the Public view link instead.

### "Could not resolve Canva short link"
The `canva.link/...` short link could not be opened. Create a new Public view link in Canva and try again, or paste the full `canva.com/design/.../view` link.

### "Canva didn't let us open this design, so it's either private or no longer exists."
Templated could not access the design. Common causes:
- The design is private. Create a **Public view link** in Canva (Share > Public view link) and paste that link.
- The link was revoked or regenerated in Canva. Copy the current link again.
- The design was deleted, or it belongs to a Canva account or team that does not allow public sharing.
- The link is for a video design (not supported).

To test: open the link in a private (incognito) browser window. If you cannot see the design there without logging in to Canva, Templated cannot see it either.

### "This design has X pages. We support importing up to 25 pages."
The design is too long. Import it in parts of 10 to 15 pages (for example, duplicate the Canva design and delete pages in each copy). Then combine the templates in My Templates: select them with the checkbox and click **Merge**.

### "You have reached the maximum number of templates"
Your account is at its plan's template limit. Imported templates count toward this limit. Delete templates you no longer need, or [upgrade your plan](https://app.templated.io/upgrade). You can see your limit in Account Settings.

### "API quota exceeded"
Your account has no credits left this month. Importing does not use a render credit, but you need credits available. Credits reset at the start of each month, or you can [upgrade your plan](https://app.templated.io/upgrade).

### "You already have a Canva import in progress"
Only one Canva import can run at a time. Wait for the current import to finish, or cancel it, then try again.

### "Something went wrong while importing your Canva design..." or "Import failed"
The import failed for a technical reason. Our team is notified automatically.
1. Wait a few minutes and try again.
2. Make sure the link is a Public view link and the design is static (not a video).
3. If the design has many pages, try importing fewer pages at a time.
4. If it still fails, send the link to us in the chat (see below).

If you see older messages such as "Puppeteer returned empty HTML" or a template named "Import Failed - ...", the link could not be read. Regenerate the Public view link in Canva, check that the design is public and not a video, and try again.

## The import worked, but the result looks wrong

The importer rebuilds your design from Canva's public view, so some differences are expected, especially in complex designs:
- **Some elements became images.** This is normal for complex groups, effects or special elements. Rebuild them as text or shape layers in the editor if you need to change them with the API.
- **Some images are missing.** Add them again from the Uploads tab in the editor.
- **Shapes look different.** Replace them with shapes from the Shapes tab.
- **Fonts changed.** Fonts that are not available in Templated are replaced by a similar font. Upload your font and apply it to the text layers.
- **An extra page appeared** (for example, a double-sided card imported with 3 pages). Delete the duplicate page in the editor.
- **Pages are missing.** Long designs can come in incomplete. Import fewer pages at a time.

Treat the import as a starting point and adjust the template in the editor.

## When to contact us in the chat

Send us a message in the chat if:
- The import keeps failing after you checked the link is a public, static design.
- The design opens in an incognito window but Templated says it is private.
- Many elements are missing or broken and you need help.

Please include:
- The **Canva Public view link** you used.
- The **error message** you see (a screenshot helps).
- The **email of your Templated account**.

## FAQ

Q: Why does it say my Canva design is private when it is not?
A: Templated needs the Public view link (Share > Public view link). Links copied from the address bar or shared only with your Canva team are not public. Open the link in an incognito window to check.

Q: Can I import a Canva video or animation?
A: No. Only static image designs are supported.

Q: My design has 50+ pages and the import fails. What can I do?
A: The limit is 25 pages per import. Import 10 to 15 pages at a time and combine the templates with Merge in My Templates.

Q: The import finished but texts are images. Why?
A: Complex elements are sometimes imported as images. Recreate them as text layers in the editor if you need to change them via the API.

Q: Can I get my credits back for a failed import?
A: Imports do not use render credits. For other credit questions, this is handled case by case by our team. Ask in the chat and a team member will help you.
