API Overview and Authentication

The Templated API allows you to programmatically generate images, PDFs, and videos from your templates.

Base URL

All API requests are made to:

https://api.templated.io/v1/

Authentication

Templated uses Bearer token authentication. Include your API key in the Authorization header of every request:

Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY

Log in to your Templated dashboard
Go to API Integration in the sidebar
Your API key is displayed there—click to copy

Rate Limits

API requests are subject to rate limiting based on your plan. If you exceed the limit, you'll receive a 429 Too Many Requests response.

Need more credits or features? Here's how to upgrade your Templated subscription.

Steps to Upgrade

Log in to app.templated.io
Click Upgrade in the sidebar (or go to Account → Billing)
Select your new plan
Enter payment details (if not already on file)
Click Upgrade Now

What Happens When You Upgrade

Immediate access to new plan's credit limit
You're charged a prorated amount for the remainder of your billing cycle
Your billing date stays the same
All your templates and renders are preserved

CORS and Image Loading Issues

Having trouble loading images? CORS policies might be the cause.

What is CORS?

Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) is a browser security feature that restricts loading resources from different domains.

The Problem

When rendering, our servers fetch your images. Some servers block these requests.

Error signs:

Images show as broken/missing
Console shows CORS errors
Render completes but without images

Solutions

1. Use CORS-Enabled Hosting

Host images on services that allow cross-origin requests:

Amazon S3 (with CORS configured)
Cloudinary
Imgix
Firebase Storage
Cloudflare R2

2. Configure Your Server

Add CORS headers to your image server:

Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *

Or specifically:

Access-Control-Allow-Origin: https://api.templated.io

3. Use Public URLs

Ensure images are:

Publicly accessible (no auth required)
Direct URLs (not redirects)
Permanent (not expiring signed URLs)

4. Use Data URLs

For small images, embed as base64:

Google Fonts

All Google Fonts are available by default:

Search in the font picker
Includes 1,400+ font families
Automatically loaded

Custom Font Upload

Upload your own brand fonts:

Go to Uploads in the Editor sidebar
Click Upload Font
Select your font file (.ttf, .otf, .woff, .woff2)
Font appears in your font picker

Reference uploaded fonts by their exact name:

Font Licensing

⚠️ Important: Ensure you have proper licensing for:

Web/digital use
Commercial use (if applicable)
Embedding in generated files

Templated doesn't verify font licenses—compliance is your responsibility.

Best Practices

Test renders with custom fonts before production
Use web-optimized formats (WOFF2 preferred)
Keep file sizes reasonable (<500KB per font)
Include all weights you need (regular, bold, etc.)

Font Fallbacks

If a font fails to load, the render uses a fallback:

Sans-serif fonts → Arial
Serif fonts → Times New Roman
Monospace fonts → Courier

External ID Sessions

When using the embedded editor with external-id, uploaded fonts are associated with that session. Users see only their own uploaded fonts.

Control what users see when they first open the embedded editor.

Available Launch Modes

1. Template Gallery (`gallery`)

Users see a gallery of available templates to choose from.

2. Direct Template (`template`)

Open directly into a specific template for editing.

3. Blank Canvas (`blank`)
