"Editor Tips: Copy and Paste, Icons, Uploads, Images, Locked Layers and More"
Quick answers to common questions about the Templated editor.
Copy and paste layers between templates
- In the first template, select one or more layers.
- Press Ctrl + C (Windows) or Cmd + C (Mac).
- Open the other template (it can be in another browser tab).
- Press Ctrl + V or Cmd + V.
The layers are pasted with their styles. If the destination template has a different size, they are adjusted to fit.
To copy a whole template, use File > Duplicate template in the editor, or Duplicate in My Templates. To combine several templates into one multi-page template, select them in My Templates and click Merge.
Duplicate a layer
Select a layer and press Ctrl/Cmd + D, or use Duplicate in the layer menu. The copy is created in the same position as the original, on top of it. Drag it or use the arrow keys to move it.
Find icons (Vectors tab)
Icons are in the Vectors tab of the left sidebar. Type a word in Search vectors... (for example "phone", "arrow", "check") and click an icon to add it. Vector icons can be recolored in the toolbar.
Upload your own images, logos, SVGs and videos (Uploads tab)
- Open the Uploads tab in the left sidebar.
- Click or drag files into the upload area. You can upload up to 5 files at a time.
- Click an upload to add it to the template.
Supported files:
- Images: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, SVG (images up to 30 MB).
- Videos: MP4, WebM, AVI, MOV (up to 100 MB).
You can add tags to uploads and search by name or tag.
Replace the image of an existing layer (keeps the position, size and layer name):
- Select the image layer.
- Click Replace in the toolbar and choose From Uploads (or From Gallery).
- Click the image you want.
Fonts are not uploaded here. See "Uploading Custom and Google Fonts".
The Layers panel
The Layers panel lists every layer of the page. Use it to select, rename (double-click the name), reorder, hide/show, lock, duplicate and delete layers. Layer names are the names you use in the API. You can drag the edge of the panel to make it wider, and double-click the edge to reset its width.
Object Fit: how an image fills its layer
Select an image layer and open Object Fit in the toolbar:
- Cover: fills the whole layer, cropping the image if needed.
- Contain: shows the entire image, may leave empty space.
- Fill: stretches the image to fill the layer, may distort it.
Use Alignment to choose which part of the image stays visible with Cover or Contain. Object Fit also works for SVG images.
Via the API, use object_fit on the image layer. See Create a render.
Logo looks squashed or cut off? Use an Image layer (not a shape) for logos and set Object Fit to Contain. The logo then keeps its proportions whatever its size.
Crop an image
Double-click the image, or click Crop Image in the toolbar, then adjust the crop area.
If Object Fit does not seem to work on an image, the image may have a crop applied. Remove the crop (reset it to the full image) and set Object Fit again. Via the API, crop uses crop_x, crop_y, crop_width and crop_height (percentages).
Locked layers
Lock a layer from the Layers panel (lock icon or Lock) or with Ctrl/Cmd + L.
- A locked layer cannot be moved or selected by accident in the editor. This is useful for backgrounds, frames and fixed structure.
- Locked layers are not returned by the API endpoints that list a template's layers and pages, unless you add
includeLockedLayers=true. See List template layers. - Unlock the layer to edit it again.
Print safe zone
For print designs (cards, flyers, labels), turn on File > Print Safe Zone. It shows a red border marking the area near the edges where content could be cut off when printing or trimming. Keep important text and logos inside it.
- Click the pixel value next to the switch to change the safe zone width (default: 5% of the template width).
- The safe zone is only a guide in the editor. It does not appear in your renders.
For printing, render as PDF. See "Printing: Pixels, DPI, PDF and CMYK".
Avoid losing changes
- Turn off browser auto-translate (Google Translate in Chrome, Edge, Safari) while editing. Translation can change your template text, and the translated text can be saved into the template.
- Do not edit the same template in two tabs or with two people at the same time. Each tab saves its own version and the last save overwrites the other.
- Auto-save: File > Auto-save saves every 15 seconds.
- Clicking the Templated logo to go back to the dashboard saves the template first.
- Made a mistake? Use Undo (Ctrl/Cmd + Z), or File > Version history to restore a saved version.
Other useful things to know
- Keyboard shortcuts: File > Shortcuts shows the full list.
- Thumbnails are low resolution on purpose to load fast. Render the template to get the full-quality image.
- Tables: there is no table element. Use a text layer with the
htmlproperty for simple lists or tables with inline styles. See "HTML Layers". - Charts: there is no chart element yet. You can generate a chart image elsewhere and send it as
image_url. - Background removal: in the editor, select an image and use Remove Background with AI. The render API does not remove backgrounds, so remove them before sending images via the API.
