Import from Canva

You can convert a Canva design into a Templated template. After the import, you can edit it in the Templated editor and generate images from it with the API, Zapier, Make, n8n or a spreadsheet.

Before you start

• The design must be shared publicly. Templated can only open designs that anyone with the link can view.
• Only static image designs can be imported (posts, flyers, cards, banners, documents). Canva video designs, animations and reels cannot be imported.
• The import is a starting point, not a perfect copy. Canva does not offer an export API, so Templated reads the public view of your design and rebuilds it as layers. Simple designs import best. Plan to review and adjust the result in the editor.

Step 1: Get the Public view link in Canva

1. Open your design in Canva.
2. Click Share (top right).
3. Choose Public view link and create the link.
4. Copy the link.

The link looks like one of these:

• https://www.canva.com/design/XXXXXXXX/YYYYYYYY/view
• https://canva.link/xxxxxxx (short links work)
• https://www.canva.cn/design/... (canva.cn links work too)

Do not copy the URL from your browser address bar while editing the design (it ends in /edit). That editor link only works if link sharing is turned on for the design. When in doubt, use the Public view link.

Step 2: Import in Templated

1. In the Templated dashboard, click Create Template (left sidebar).
2. Open the Canva tab.
3. Paste the link in the Public View Link field.
4. Click Import Design.
5. Wait while Templated fetches the design and creates the template. For multi-page designs you see a progress bar ("X / Y pages imported"). You can click Cancel import at any time.

When it finishes, the new template opens in the editor.

Page limits

• Multi-page Canva designs are imported as one template with several pages.
• The maximum is 25 pages per import. Larger designs are rejected with a message asking you to reduce the number of pages.
• For the best results, import 10 to 15 pages or fewer at a time. Long designs take longer and are more likely to come in incomplete.
• Need more pages? Import the design in parts (for example, duplicate the Canva design and delete pages so each copy has up to 10 to 15 pages), then combine the imported templates with Merge in My Templates (select the templates with the checkbox, click Merge).
• For carousels with repeated layouts, import only the unique pages. You can repeat a page as many times as you need when rendering, using the pages parameter of the API. See Create a render.

Credits and template limit

• An imported template counts toward your plan's template limit, like any other template. If you are at the limit, the import is blocked with "You have reached the maximum number of templates". Delete a template or upgrade your plan.
• Importing does not use a render credit, but your account needs credits available. If you have 0 credits left, the import is blocked with "API quota exceeded".
• You can run one Canva import at a time.

What gets imported

• Text (as editable text layers)
• Images
• Shapes and backgrounds
• Positions and sizes
• Multiple pages

Expect differences in complex designs:

• Some elements may become images instead of editable layers.
• Some images may not import.
• Some shapes may convert incorrectly.
• Fonts that are not available in Templated are replaced by a similar font. Upload your font (see "Uploading Custom and Google Fonts") and apply it to the text layers.
• Effects, filters and animations are not carried over.

After the import

1. Check every page against your Canva design and fix any differences.
2. Rename the layers you want to change with the API to clear names (for example title, photo, price). The API uses these exact layer names.
3. Save the template.
4. Test with the Playground or a render before using it in production.

FAQ

Q: Which Canva link do I need?
A: The Public view link (Canva > Share > Public view link). Short canva.link links also work.

Q: Can I import a Canva video, reel or animated design?
A: No. Only static image designs can be imported. Animations can be added later in the Templated editor for MP4 renders.

Q: Why does my imported template look different from Canva?
A: The importer rebuilds the design from Canva's public view, so complex designs may need manual adjustments. Use the import as a starting point and fix the details in the editor.

Q: How many pages can I import?
A: Up to 25 pages per import. For best results, import 10 to 15 pages at a time and combine templates with Merge.

Q: Does importing from Canva cost credits?
A: It does not use a render credit, but you need credits available and the template counts toward your template limit.

Q: Can I import from Figma?
A: No. There is no Figma importer. You can import Canva links and PDF, Photoshop (PSD), Illustrator (AI) and PowerPoint (PPTX) files.
